Seminar on ‘Roles and Responsibilities of the Youth in Waste Management’
Under Swachha Bharat Abhiyaan, the Centre organized a seminar on the topic ‘Roles and responsibilities of the Youth in Waste Management’ on August 10, 2019. Shri Shrikant Parab, Mentor, Clean We Go, an NGO, addressed the NSS students from various colleges. Shri Parab highlighted the various causes, effects and side effects of waste, its management and also made the students aware about the growing problem of waste disposal in our country. A small skit on waste management was also presented by the students to convey the message in traditional way. This was followed by a short film on the landfill in Fursungi, Pune. He guided the students on various waste related issues and solutions for the same. He urged the youth of our nation to wake up and change their perception towards waste management. 253 students from 5 colleges participated in the seminar.
Beach Clean-up programme
As a part of Swachh Bharat Mission, Centre in collaboration with the NGO Beach Warriors organised a Dadar Beach clean-up programme on 17th August, 2019. Team of 72 peoples including Officers & staff members of Nehru Science Centre, volunteers cum members of Beach Warriors and ITI - NSS volunteers participated in the programme.
Cyber Security – A Skype lecture and Panel Discussion
Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai in collaboration with Consulate General of Israel, Mumbai organised a Skype Lecture and Panel Discussion on the theme ‘Cyber Security’ at the Centre on19th August, 2019. Initially, the skype lecture was delivered by Mr Menny Barzilay, an internationally known Cyber Security Expert from Israel. He talked about the various causes and concerns related to cyber security and how to overcome them. What precautions we need to take to minimise the risks involved. The lecture was followed by a Panel discussion. The galaxy of panellists Mr Sachin, SP from Maharshtra Cyber crime branch of Police, Dr. Manoj M. Prabhakaran, Vijay & Sita Vashee Chair Professor, Computer Science & Engineering, IIT, Bombay, Mr. Menny Barzilay, Internationally acclaimed, Cyber Security Expert, Israel and A director of an NGO were present and answered the various queries of the audience. In all 397 visitors including students, teachers and media people attended the programmes.
Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) workshop for special children
Centre in collaboration with Bombay International School (BIS) organised a CAS workshop (Creativity, Activity, Service) for special children on 26.08.2019. 33 children from Jai Vakeel Foundation participated in this workshop and enjoyed fun science experiments followed by hands-on session. Science kits viz: climbing butterfly and bird in a cage were made by these children under the guidance of 12 students from BIS. In all 61 students, teachers and parents actively participated in this workshop.
Popular Science Lecture and Film show
To bring the awareness about India’s Mission to Moon especially Chandrayaan 2 which was launched very recently on 22nd July, 2019 and will be landing on Moon on 7th September, 2019 and understanding of the Chandrayaan 2 mission, a popular talk was organised at the Centre on 30th August, 2019 on the topic “Over the Moon” . The lecture was delivered by Prof M. N. Vahia, Former Scientist, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and a renowned expert in Astronomy & Astrophysics. The lecture was aimed to address the questions and queries in the students’ mind and to explain how this mission helps stimulating the advancement of technology, promotes global alliances and inspires a future generation of explorers and scientists.
The lecture was followed by screening of the film ‘Mangalyaan: India’s Mission to Mars’ in collaboration with National Geographic. 583 visitors attended programmes. (247 for the lecture and 336 for the film show)
Underwater Robotics workshop for engineering students:
Underwater workshop on Robotics was organised at the Centre 31st August, 2019 for engineering college students. The workshop covered basics of assembly, operation and applications of underwater robotics. About 20 students participated in the workshop. This was followed by a oral quiz on the workshop learning.
Mobile Science Exhibition
Mobile Science Exhibition (MSE) unit of NSC, Mumbai on curriculum based started the MSE programmes in Kolhapur district from 17th July, 2019 and still continuing organising the exhibitions. During the month, MSE programmes were organised in 15schools of Kolhapur district. Apart from MSE, science demonstration lectures and science film shows were also organised.
Exposure visits to the Innovation Hub
To create awareness among students and teachers about the facilities available at the Innovation Hub, exposure visits to the innovation hub has been organised. During the month 1562 students and teachers from 15 schools were given exposure to the hubs.
The Centre organised 2 SCI-Birthday programmes on 31st August, 2019. About 60 kids, parents along with their host participated and enjoyed in the programmes. The participants were taken to various facilities of the centre and special shows were organised for them.
During the month, 20packagetours were availed by schools for about 3245students and teachers. They were given the guided tour of the galleries, Science Shows and Science On a Sphere shows were also organized.
