Marathi – Malayali Ethnic Fest 2018
The Centre organized Marathi - Malayali Ethnic Fest 2018 from 16th to 18th February 2018 in collaboration with All Mumbai Malayali Association (AMMA). During the event following competitions were organized for the students, teachers & general public.
a) Painting Competition for Jr. group (upto 4th Std.) & Sr. group(Std.6th to 10th ) was organized separately at this centre on 16.02.2018. “Visit to a Park” and “Conserve water, save earth” were the topics for the Jr. and the Sr. groups respectively.
In all 84 students participated in the contest.
b) Rangoli competition was organised in the afternoon session for the students up to 10th Std in the Science for Children gallery of the Centre on 16.02.2018. 6 students took part and drew the colorful rangolis by using rangoli powder and flowers on the topic ‘Nature around us’.
c) Elocution contest was conducted on 17th February, 2018 for school students from std. 6th to 10th in which 10 students participated and expressed their thoughts on the topic “Environment and Traditional Practices”.
d) As part of Ethnic festival, performance of traditional art forms of Kerala & Maharashtra like Bharatanatyam, Mohiniattam, Ottanthullal, Thiruvathirakali, Lavni, Koli dance, singing competition(solo) etc. were organised on 17th & 18th February, 2018. In all 40 participants from various schools and social groups presented various dances and songs. The cultural programmes were organised on 17th and 18th February, 2018 in the evening which about 450 visitors including students, teachers and general public attended the programme and enjoyed the fusion of Marathi Malyali culture.
Swachh Bharat Abhiyan
As a part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, a street play and clean-up project was organised at the science park area of the centre on 13th February 2018 in collaboration with NSS Unit of D.G.Ruparel College, Mumbai. In all 65 NSS volunteers participated in the mission.
Science Film Festival
The Centre organized a Science Film Festival during the period 20th -28th February, 2018. During the period the award winning films of the 6th National Science Film Festival were screened. 10 film shows were organised. 450 students and general visitors have seen the shows.
Inter school Annual Science Quiz Contest- Grand Finale
Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai organised Grand Finale of Inter-school Annual Science Quiz for English Medium School students of Mumbai in association with Rotary Club of Bombay Pier and Rotary Club of Bombay Queen City on 21.02.2018.
The questions were based on various themes viz: Sci-toons, Google-Doodle, Robotics and AI, Buzzer, rapid fire etc. There were some questions based on galleries & science experiments (QUEST), which was conducted by the Nehru Science Centre’s education staff.
The Final was followed by valediction and prize distribution function. Rtn. Prafull Sharma, District Governor, Rotary Club of District 3141 was the Chief Guest of the function and Miss Brinda Miller, Honorary Festival Director, Kala Ghoda Arts Festival was the Guest of Honor. Rtn. Paresh Shah, President, Rotary Club of Bombay Pier and Rtn. Shyam Makharia, President, Rotary Club of Bombay Queen City were also prominently present on the occasion. 250 students from different schools of Mumbai attended the programme.
The Grand Finale of Inter-school Annual Science Quiz for Marathi Medium School students was conducted on 09.02.2018. 16 students participated in the quiz. 110 visitors witnessed the quiz.
Science Quiz Contest (Marathi medium)
During the month, 2 semifinal rounds for Marathi medium schools were conducted on 3rd February, 2018. 32 students from 4 schools participated in the contests. The quiz rounds were witnessed by 75 audience.
The Centre actively participated in an outreach programme at Maratha Vidyalaya, Mumbai on 15th February 2018 by organizing 2 science shows on fun Science and fun with liquid nitrogen. About 475 students and teachers attended the science shows.
The Centre also organized science shows at D.G.Ruparel College, Matunga on 17th February 2018 in collaboration with N.S.S. unit of D.G.Ruparel College witnessed by 200 participants.
Symposium on Prosperity through Science & Technology
Centre in collaboration with National Centre for Science Communicators & Marathi Vidyan Parishad organized a symposium on Prosperity through Science and Technology at the Centre on 16th February, 2018. The symposium was organised with an aim at carrying forward a mission that helps in spreading a message that S & T benefits human society. The seminar was organised in 3 sessions. Session on Energy, Session on Food and Nutrition and Session on Healthcare. The sessions were conducted by Dr. S. P. Sukhatme, Former Director, IIT, Powai, Prof. J. B. Joshi, Former Director, ICT, Mumbai, Prof. Rangan Banerjee, IIT, Powai, Dr. V. Prakash, Former Director, CFTIR, Mysore, Prof. Rekha Singhal, ICT, Mumbai, Dr. Shubhangi Parkar, Dean, G. S. Medical College, MumbaiDr. Rutuja Hadaye, G. S. Medical College, Mumbai, Dr. Amita Athavale, LTM Hospital, Sion and Dr. Anil kakodkar, former Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission, Govt. of India handled the sessions. About 230 science communicators attended the sessions.
Death of a Architecture: a Travelling Exhibition
Centre in association with the 13 well known Architects of the Country has put up a travelling exhibition titled “Death of Architecture”. The exhibition was formally inaugurated on 23rd February, 2018 and will remain open up to 4th March, 2018.
National Science Day Celebration- 2018
National Science Day was celebrated at the Centre, during 20th- 28th February, 2018 to mark the well-known discovery of a great Indian scientist Sir. C. V. Raman, by organizing variety of programmes and competitions for school/college students, teachers and general public. The theme of this year’s National Science Day celebration was “Science and Technology for Sustainable Future” The celebration started from 20th February, 2018 by organizing Science Slogan Writing and Sci-toon contests. The topics for the contests were “Science and Technology for Sustainable Future“ and “Future Earth” respectively. 27 students participated in slogan writing and 31 students in sci-toon contest. On 21st February, Robotic Demonstration was organised at the Centre by Team R Factor, a group of 25 students conducted the demonstrations. About 275 students enjoyed the Robotics demos. On 22nd February, 2018, popular talk on “Hyper Loop” was organized. Mr. Mirza Samnani of Team Technovators, Mumbai delivered the talk. Elocution Competition on the topic “Electric transport system 2020 was organised on 23rd February, 2018 in which 7 students had registered their name and 3 of them expressed their views on the given topic. On 24th February interschool written science quiz contest was organized on the topic “Science and Technology for Sustainable Future” in which 36 students participated., On 25th February, 2018, Sit and Draw contest was conducted for the students in 3 different categories, i.e. category A- upto 4th Std, Category B - 5th to 7th Std and category C- 8th to 10th Std on the topics ‘‘Earth - Our most valuable resource”, “Science and Technology for greener future” and "Science and Technology for Sustainable future” respectively. In all 24 students participated in the competition. On 26th February, 2018, Street play/ Nukkad Natak competition was organized. 7 students of Kendriya Vidyalaya, Mankhurd enacted the street play on the theme Science and Technology for Sustainable future. About 200 audience witnessed the play. In addition to all these, ¬¬¬¬11 Open house science quiz/quest, 30 Science shows, 10 Science Film show / Film festival and 04 Sky observation programmes were also organised during the period of celebration. About 660 visitors in open house quiz, 1877 in science shows, 450 in science film shows and 255 visitors in sky observation programmes participated.
Mobile Science Exhibition:
As a part of National Science Day celebration, the Centre organized Mobile Science Exhibitions (MSE) at Indian Women Science Association(IWSA), Vashi, New Mumbai on 22nd & 23rd February, 2018. 3132 visitors including students, teachers and general public visited the exhibition. 3 science shows were also organized which were attended by 475 visitors.
Another programme of Mobile Science Exhibition was organized at Amity University, Panvel on 28th February, 2018. About 2300 visitors including students, teachers and general public visited the exhibition. 2 science shows were also organized which were attended by 500 students and teachers.
The event was culminated on 28th February, 2018 by organising Sir C. V. Raman Memorial lecture(Skype). Prof. Shishir Deshpande, Project Director, ITER India , Institute for Plasma Research, Gandhinagar delivered the lecture on the topic “Fusion: Science and Technology” About 240 visitors including students, teachers and general public attended the lecture and the valedictory function. The Guest of Honor, Dr. A. P. Jayaraman, National Centre for Science Communicators, Mumbai distributed the prizes to the winners. The event was catalyzed and supported by the National Council for Science and Technology Communication (NCSTC), Department of Science and Technology, Government of India and Rajiv Gandhi Science and Technology Commission, Government of Maharashtra.
During the month, 54 package tours were organized for about 5795 students and teachers. They were given the Guided tour of the galleries, Science Shows and Human Anatomy Shows were also organized.
