National Workshop on Learning in Science Museums
A national workshop on ‘Learning in Science Museums’ as a part of CRTL’s silver jubilee celebration was organized at Nehru Science Centre during July 16-20, 2018. The workshop was conducted by Ms. Karen Lee and Ms. Gretchen Jennings, former museum professions of Smithsonian Institution, USA. It was attended by 20 museum professionals (curators, education officers and education assistants) from different NCSM units of North, West and South zones.
Mobile Science Exhibition
Mobile Science Exhibition (MSE) unit of NSC, Mumbai on curriculum based started the MSE programmes in Kolhapur district from 17th July, 2018. During the month, MSE programmes were organised in 6 schools of Kolhapur district. Apart from MSE, science demonstration lectures and science film shows were also organised.
Moon landing Day celebration
Moon Landing Day was celebrated at the Centre on 19th & 20th July, 2018 by organising film shows in the auditorium of the Centre. On the occasion, 2 films titled Passage to the Moon and The Moon within reach were screened for the visitors. Science On a Sphere shows exclusively on The Moon were also organised for school students and general public. In all 8 film shows and 14 Science On a Sphere shows were conducted. There were about 1290 visitors for film shows and 832 visitors for SOS shows.
17th Batch of the Innovation Hub has started at the Centre on 14th July, 2018 for the quarter July- September, 2018. 44 students have enrolled for this batch. During the month 6 sessions of Integrated Science were organised in which the students were given out of the box puzzles and problems and hands-on activities in physics. 3 sessions of Robotics were also organised.
Exposure visits to the Innovation Hub:
To create awareness among students and teachers about the facilities available at the Innovation Hub, exposure visits to the innovation hub has been organised. During the month 440 students and teachers from 4 schools were given exposure to the hubs.
The Centre has organised a SCI-Birthday programme on 6th July, 2018. 50 kids, parents along with their host participated in the programme. The participants were taken to various facilities of the Centre and special shows.
Observation of Total Lunar Eclipse
To observe the longest Total Lunar Eclipse of the Century, The Centre organised Lunar Eclipse viewing programme at the Centre on 27th July, 2018 from 11.00 PM to 3.00 AM. 3 telescopes were mounted for viewing the eclipse. Interactive sessions were organised for the visitors about the occurrence and viewing of the total lunar eclipse. Due to dense clouds in Mumbai sky, visitors could not observe the total lunar eclipse however they could only have a glimpse of the eclipse. But to boost their enthusiasm, Centre took help of technology to show the eclipse through live streaming. However simulation of the event was created using Stellarium software, and live streaming of the event was also made available for the visitors. About 230 visitors attended the programme.
During the month, 11 package tours were organized for about 2477 students and teachers.
They were given the Guided tour of the galleries, Science Shows, 3D shows and Science On a Sphere shows were also organized.
