Interschool Annual Science Quiz contest
Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai in active collaboration with Rotary Club of Bombay Pier and Rotary Club of Bombay Queen City organised a verbal rounds of Inter-school Annual Science Quiz for English and Marathi Medium Schools during 26th - 30th November, 2018. Eight rounds of Marathi & English Medium each were conducted till 30th November 2018 for 32 English Medium Schools & 28 Marathi Schools. The semifinal rounds of English and Marathi mediums will be organised 5th, 6th & 8th December 2018. 212 students actively took part in the contests.
International Science Centre & Science Museum Day
International Science Centre & Science Museum Day on the theme Science A Human Right and also Anniversary Day of the Centre was celebrated at the Centre during 10th - 18th November 2018.
On 10th November, public talk was organised. The talk was delivered by Dr Anita Sengupta, Sr. Vice President Hyper Loop One & Former NASA Engineer interacted with the students. Around 300 visitors attended the talk. The talk was followed by the open house quiz on Atom for all. Public demonstrations on matter at low temperature and fun science were also organised. Hands on experience of various activities were also given to the general visitors. About 300 visitors including students and general visitor participated in the programme.
To mark the Anniversary day celebration, workshop on creative learning for underprivileged children and hands-on science for general pubic were organised. On 18th November, Sunday Art event was organised in which workshops based on Art & Science were organised. In all 200 visitors participated in the programmes.
Children’s Film Bonanza
The Centre and Children Film Society India organised Children’s Film Bonanza on the eve of Children’s Day during 13th to 16th November 2018. The programme was organised with a motto of “Promoting Every child’s right to Entertainment”. The programme was inaugurated on 13th November 2018 by Shri Sunil Advani, Film Director – ‘Ek Ajooba’. Shri S.M.Khened, Director, NSCM welcomed all the guests for the function. Ms Swati Pandey, CEO – CFSI & Director – Administration, Films Division, Dr.Narayan Iyer, CEO & National Coordinator of Indian Development Foundation, Shri Aditya Jhunjhunwala, Chairman, Round Table India were prominently present on the occasion. The inaugural function was followed by screening of the film ‘Ek Ajooba’. In all 8 films produced by CFSI were screened during 13-16 Nov. 2018 like Ek Ajooba, Gattu, Neel Parbat Ke us paar, Uranchoo, Laadli, Bandu Boxer, Foto, Samay ka Chamatkar etc. Various school students including the slum dwelling children from schools and NGO’s like Indian
Development Foundation (IDF) and Round Table India (RTI) participated in the programme. The children were exposed to all the facilities of the Centre. They were provided with refreshment as well.
In all about 1045 children took an advantage of this unique opportunity.
Children’s Day Celebration
Children’s Day was celebrated at the Centre on 14th November, 2018 by organizing hands-on activities like making a paper rotocopter , making slime , dancing snake, etc for the kids who visited the Centre as a general visitors. In addition to these science shows containing science experiments were also organized. About 280 kids and parents participated in the programme.
Zonal Level Science Drama Competition (West Zone)
Western Zonal Level Science Drama Competition was organized at the Centre on 28th November, 2018. 11 schools from 6 States i.e. Chhattisgarh, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Rajasthan participated in the drama competition and enacted their plays. The Science Drama Competition was inaugurated by Shri Prashant Pathrabe (I.I.S.), Director General, Film Divison(Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Govt. of India). Out of the 11 teams, 3 teams namely Children’s Academy, Malad,East, Bhatikar Model High School, Margo, Goa and Sahyadri National School, Warje, Pune were selected in the order of Merit by the panel of judges for the award of 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize respectively. In addition to this, best direction, best actor and best actress prizes were also given. About 220 visitors witnessed the dramas.
Mobile Science Exhibition in Kolhapur District
2nd phase of Mobile Science Exhibition(MSE) on curriculum based has started in the schools of Kolhapur district from 20th November, 2018. During the month, the MSE bus has covered 6 sites. The exhibitions will be organized till last week of January 2019.
The Centre has organised a SCI-Birthday programme on 12th November, 2018. 50 kids, their parents along with the host participated in the programme. The participants were taken to various facilities of the centre & special shows. They were also given hands-on activities.
During the month, the Centre has extended the facility of package tour on advance booking for 4482 students and teachers of 29 schools. Apart from Science Odyssey, Science on a Sphere and 3D shows, they were given guided tour of the galleries, science shows, visits to innovation hub and spark theatre shows were also organized.
Centre has organised an outreach SDL programme at Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune during their Annual Science, Social and Cultural Festival - Karavaan 2018 on November 3, 2018. During the lecture programme various science experiments on the Experiments Induction Cooktop, Fun at Low Temperature and fun with physics & chemistry were demonstrated. Around 200 students were present to witness the programe.
