‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ – cleanliness mission at KEM Hospital
Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai in collaboration with KEM Hospital and JJ School of Arts organised a KEM Cleanliness Mission ‘Swachhata Hi Seva’ as a part of Swachhata Pakhawada in the premises of KEM Hospital during 27th September to 2nd October 2018.
On 1st October, programs initiated with a Street Play by NSS volunteers from Dr.Ambedkar College followed by a rally around the KEM campus. Also KEM School of Nursing organized a street play near Dean Office. Around 200 students actively participated in the program. 1800 visitors witnessed the event.
As a part of this program, wall paintings sponsored by National Gallery of Modern Art were displayed permanently in the main building and multi-storied building of KEM Hospital. Also a wall was painted near Multi-storied Building, KEM by the students of Sir J. J. School of Art to mark the Swachhata Mission drive.
LitFest 2018 Mumbai
The times of India LitFest 2018, Mumbai is schedule to be held in Mumbai during 14th – 16th December, 2018. Times of India & Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai partnered to take the awareness and educative value of this festival to school students. As a part of this Fest, Centre organised poster making and slogan writing contests for 6th to 10th grade students on 5th & 6th October, 2018. ‘Conserve Water Save Earth’ and ‘Water: The Elixir of Life’ were respectively the topics for the poster and slogan writing contests. More than 150 students participated in the contests.
Visit of Shri Arun Goel, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Government of India:
Shri Arun Goel, IAS, Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Government of India visited Nehru Science Centre and it’s facility Machined to Think and Sound & Hearing galleries on 7th October, 2018 and also interacted with the officers of the Centre. Shri Goel discussed and gave several suggestions for better take home messages and enhancing learning outcomes from visits to science centres by visitors.
World Space Week
As a part of World Space Week celebration, Nehru Science Centre in collaboration with R-FACTOR & TEAM ELEV8 organised IN THE ORBIT SPACE THEME ROBOTICS WORKSHOP at the Centre on 10th October, 2018. Participating students were given robotic demonstrations and the hands-on activities of assembling different types of robots. Finally competition was conducted among the teams for performing different tasks by using robots. In all 200 students along with their teacher and parent participated in the programme.
STEM learning workshop for girls
A weeklong programme for science discovery to explore the linkage of everything around us in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics was organized at the Centre during 8th – 13th October, 2018 in collaboration with Covestro & Greenlight for girls and Chandramohan Foundation. The program aims to encourage girls to take their future career in STEM field by giving them exposure to various fields available in Science and Technology. 6 STEM workshops per day each of 45 minutes duration were organised with interactive hands-on unbelievably fun learning led by experts from India and overseas. During the workshop, 18 sets of Polymer Putty, DNA extraction and Make it glow projects were prepared by the participants. The workshops were supplemented by Meet the Women Scientist programmes. The participants got the opportunity to interact with the leading women scientists every day. Science on a Sphere shows were also organised for the participants as a part of the STEM workshops.
Around 1200 girl students from 35 schools participated in this week long program.
XXIII International Astronomy Olympiad – Press Meet:
Press Conference cum meeting and interaction with the Indian team (students), who participated and won one gold and two silver Medals at the 23rd International Astronomy Olympiad, held in Colombo (Sri Lanka), was organised on 16th October 2018 at 11:00 AM at Nehru Science Centre.
The three Indian students, Master Chahel Singh from Delhi Public School, Pune City, Master Adarsh Reddy Madur, and Master Varanasi Sai Teja from Narayana Co Campus, Gafoor Nagar, Cyberabad Madhapur Hyderabad represented India at the 23rd International Astronomy Olympiad, which was coordinated by the Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai, a unit of National Council of Science Museums, Ministry of Culture Government of India.
Rosatom Festival of Science & Culture
Nehru Science Centre Mumbai in collaboration with Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation, Russia celebrated Rosatom Festival of Science & Culture during 25th & 26th October 2018. The Festival was formally inaugurated by Shri S. K. Malhotra, Secretary, Atomic Energy Education Society, Mumbai & Shri Mikhail Kornienko, World famous Russian Cosmonaut. Shri Andrey Shevlyakov, CEO of Rosatom South Asia and Ms Daria Savchenko, Press Secretary, Rosatom South Asia were prominently present on the occasion. The inaugural function was followed an Art Festival on theme ‘Light of Life’. Experts from JJ School of Arts gave live demonstrations on portrait making, clay modeling, sculpture making etc.
Also a painting contest for school and college students was organised on theme ‘Indo-Russia Anushakti Druzba’ in which 82 students took part. The painting contest was followed by Interactive Logical Game. The quiz was conducted by Mr Alexander, Rosatom. 23 students from different schools actively took part in the Quiz. Also a Nuclear Olympiad for students was organized in which different questions based on physics were asked to the participants. 25 students took part in the programme. An Inspirational Talk by Mikhail Kornienko, Russian Cosmonaut was the main attraction of the programme. The Cosmonaut shared his experiences in space with the students. Students asked many questions to the Cosmonaut. A popular talk was also arranged after the Astro-meet. Ms Olga Momot, Associate Professor, MEPhI, Moscow, Russia delivered the talk on ‘Nuclear Power’. The programme was culminated with prize distribution function. Around 250 students and teachers were present on the occasion.
On 26th October, programmes started with unveiling of a Book titled ‘Nuclear ABC?’ which was briefed by Ms Daria Savchenko, Press Secretary, Rosatom South Asia. 200 students were present for the programme. The event was followed by Model Festival in which 25 students participated. After this, Astronauts Meet - Inspirational Talk by Mikhail Kornienko, Russian Cosmonaut was organised which was followed by Question Answer session. Also popular talk on ‘Nuclear Radiations’ was delivered by Ms. Elena Sarapultseva, Professor of Biotechnology at National Research Nuclear University (MEPhI), Moscow, Russia. Around 200 students were present for the lecture programme.
Science Seminar on Green Future for Next Generation:
Inn order to create awareness about the climate change and its profound impact everywhere on our home planet, the Centre is collaboration with Rotary District 3141 with lead host club of Rotary Club of Deonar and TERI – The Energy & Resources Institute organised a seminar on Green Future for Next generation at the Centre on 28th October 2018. During the seminar Dr. (Ms.) Rashneh N. Pardiwala, Founder & Director, Centre for Environmental Research & Education (CERE) presented a Biodiversity walkthrough whereas the talk on Evolution of Electric Vehicle and other relevant topics were delivered by the experts participated in the seminar. On the occasion, different models of electric vehicles were also kept on display by Mahindra Motors for visitors. About 230 visitors attended the programme.
Project / Model presentation contest:
As a part of seminar on Green Future for Next Generation, a Project / Model presentation contest was organised at the Centre on 28th October, 2018 in collaboration with Rotary District 3141 with lead host club of Rotary Club of Deonar and TERI – The Energy & Resources Institute, Mumbai. The main topic of the contest was Green Future for Next Generation, whereas Alternatives to Plastics, Solar Energy, Wind Energy, Electric Vehicle and Eco-City were the 5 subtopics of the contest. In all 11 projects / models participated in the contest. Shri Sudhir Mehta & Ms.Lekha Nair, Members of Rotary Club, Deonar and Ms.Pranali Chauhan, Research Associate, TERI evaluated the projects for the award of prizes. Shree Amulakh Amichand Bhimji Vidyalaya, Matunga, Children’s Academy, Malad (E) and N.E.S. High School, Bhandup(W) grab the 1st , 2nd and 3rd prize respectively. 60 students, teachers and parents attended the programme.
Workshop on Energy was organized at the Centre on 23rd October 2018. 28 students from Ecole Mondiale World School, Juhu, Mumbai participated in the workshop. During the workshop, various energy related demonstrations like heat energy, chemical energy, mechanical energy etc. were shown to the students also hands-on activities, like lemon battery, make it glow(glowing LED light), etc. explaning energy concepts, were organised for the students and teachers.
Workshop for Special children:
A workshop was conducted at the Centre for 20 special children & teachers of Jai Vakeel School on 29th October 2018. Live and fascinating demonstrations on Induction Cooktop, Liquid Nitrogen were arranged for these students. Also hands on activities viz. making slime and ‘fish in a pot’ were organised for these students. These special children were accompanied by 20 students of Bombay International School.
Vigilance Awareness Week
Vigilance Awareness Week is being observed at the Centre from 29th October to 2nd November 2018 with an endeavour to promote integrity, transparency and accountability in public life. This year’s theme is ‘Eradicate Corruption – Build a new India’. Various programmes like Pledge taking, Quiz contest, Drop a slogan contest and Essay Writing Competition are being organised for the public, officers and staff members. On this occasion a Pledge was administered to all the Officers and Staff members on 30.10.2018. Flex banners regarding observance of Vigilance Awareness Week were displayed in the premises of the Centre. 3 film shows and 3 open house quizzes science demonstrations were also conducted for the visitors of the Centre during 29th -31st October, 2018. In all about 220 visitors participated in the programme.
National Unity Day Celebration (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas)
To mark the Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Unity Day was celebrated at the Centre on 31st October, 2018. On this occasion a Unity Pledge was administered to all the Officers and Staff members on 31st October, 2018. Open house quiz on life & work of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, film shows and science shows were also organised for school students and general visitors. About 130 visitors participated in the programme.
The Centre has organised a SCI-Birthday programme on 21st October, 2018. 35 kids their parents along with the host participated in the programme. The participants were taken to various facilities of the Centre special shows. They were also given hands-on activities.
During the month, the Centre has extended the facility of package tour on advance booking for 5768 students and teachers of 38 schools. Apart from Science Odyssey, Science on a Sphere and 3D shows, they were given guided tour of the galleries, science shows, visits to innovation hub and spark theatre shows were also organized.
