Vigilance Awareness Week
Vigilance Awareness Week on the Theme 'My Vision: Corruption free India' was observed at Nehru Science Centre from 31st October to 4th November 2017 with an endeavor to promote integrity, transparency and accountability in public life. An Integrity Pledge was administered to all the Officers and Staff Members on 31.10.2017. On 1st and 2nd November, 2017, Essay writing and Elocution contests on the topic 'My Vision: Corruption free India' were organized for the Officers and staff members. On 4th November, 2017, Popular talk on the topic ‘Corruption free India’ was delivered by Shri Suhas Raikar, ACP, Worli Police Station. Apart from these, flex banners regarding observance of Vigilance Awareness Week were also displayed in the premises of the Centre.
Workshop on Energy was organized at the Centre on 1st November 2017. 22 students from Ecole Mondiale World School, Juhu, Mumbai participated in the workshop. During the workshop, various energy related demonstrations and hands-on activities, explaining energy concepts, were organised for the students and teachers.
Workshop on Pantophysics
The Centre in collaboration with Consulate General of Israel, Mumbai organised a workshop for teachers & students on 7th November, 2017. The interactive workshop titled "Pantophysics" was conducted by Dr. Ran Peleg, Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel. Dr. Peleg holds a B.A. and M. Eng. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in Science Education from the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. The workshop began with simple experiments and then a short mime-theatre piece about space travel. Learners then learn mime and physics to decipher and better understand the natural laws that govern our world. About 375 students and teachers attended the workshop.
Inauguration of Noble Prize Winners -2017 Exhibition
Panel exhibition of Noble Prize winners – 2017 was inaugurated at the Centre on 7th November, 2017. The exhibition was inaugurated by Dr. Ran Peleg from Weizmann Institute of Science, Israel and is on display for the visitors. The exhibition showcases the outstanding contributions of the Nobel Prize winners for humanity in the field of Chemistry, Literature, Peace, Physics, Physiology or Medicine and Economic Sciences.
STEM learning workshop for girls
STEM learning workshop for girls : A weeklong programme for science discovery to explore the linkage of everything around us in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics was organized at the Centre during 8th – 15th November, 2017 in collaboration with Covestro & Greenlight for girls and Chandramohan Foundation. 6 STEM workshops per day each of 45 minutes duration were organised with interactive hands-on unbelievably fun learning led by experts from India and overseas. During the workshop, 18 sets of Polymer Putty, DNA extraction and Vibrobot projects were prepared by the participants. The workshops were supplemented by Meet the Women Scientist programmes. The participants got the opportunity to interact with the leading women scientists every day. Science on a Sphere shows were also organised for the participants as a part of the STEM workshops. In all 1327 girl students and 105 teachers participated in the workshop.
International Science Centre and Science Museum Day
International Science Centre and Science Museum Day and Anniversary Day was celebrated at the Centre during 10th & 11th November, 2017. The theme of celebration was “Science for Global Understanding”. Various programmes organized are as follows:
Meet the Women Scientist: Lecture cum interaction session was organized on 10th November, 2017 for the girl students. Prof. Vidita Vaidya of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research(TIFR), Mumbai interacted with the students and talked about her journey as a scientist and encouraged the students to become a scientist. During her interaction, she addressed various queries of the students and teachers. About 220 students and teachers took part in the interaction session.
Workshop on Tod-Fod-Jod: Workshop on Tod-Fod-Jod was organized for the students at the Centre. The aim of the workshop was to make people aware about the various types of house hold gadgets, like old radio, tape recorder, taps etc. and their working. How to maintain and repair these gadgets in case they didn’t function properly. 59 students and teachers participated in the workshop.
Painting Contest: Painting contest for 3 different categories i.e. upto 4th std., std. 5th to 7th and std. 8th to 10th was organized at the Centre on the topics ‘Visit to Zoo’, ‘Save Water’ and Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao respectively. 21 students participated in the contest including 11 students from a special school.
Science Show: 2 science shows on Fun at low temperature and Fun with Science were also organized at the Centre. About 150 visitors attended the science shows.
Anniversary Day Celebration
On 11th November, 2017, Centre celebrated its 32nd Anniversary Day. Meet the women scientist session was organized in which Dr. Swati Bedekar, Science Communicator interacted with the students and teachers and enlightened them about various aspects of Science & Technology. She also talked about her journey as women scientist. About 210 students and teachers attended the interaction session. One day exhibition of articles made by differently abled students was also organized as a part of this celebration. The exhibition was put up by 8 different institutions including special schools & NGO’s. 40 participants from these institutes participated. Many beautiful articles made by differently abled students were on display for the visitors of the Centre. In the afternoon session, hands-on workshop for differently abled students was organized. 28 differently abled students along with their 5 teachers participated in the workshop and made various science toys like paper rotocopter, paper rocket, balloon straw, Thread tornado, cup helicopter, etc by using straw, balloons, pencils, rubber bands. The workshop was followed by live Science Show on Fun with Science for general visitors. About 130 visitors witnessed the science show.
Outreach Programme at TIFR
A theme meeting on “Science and Technology in National Development: Energy, Education, Knowledge Network, National Security, Rural Development - A Tribute to Dr. R. Chidambaram” was organised on 11th November, 2017 at the historic Homi Bhabha Auditorium, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai jointly by the National Centre for Science Communicators, Nehru Science Centre, Mumbai, Materials Research Society of India, Mumbai Chapter, Indian Physics Association, The Board of Research in Nuclear Sciences and Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. Meeting was attended by renowned scientists, researchers, science communicators, school and college students. In total around 900 plus audience was there.
Inauguration of Inter-School Annual Science Quiz Contest & Elimination Round
Inter-School Science Quiz Contest for the year 2017-18 was organized at the Centre in association with the Rotary Club of Bombay Pier and Rotary Club of Bombay Queen City. The quiz programme was inaugurated on 20th November, 2017 by Rtn. Prafulla Sharma, District Governor. The inauguration programme was followed by the written elimination round for both the English and Marathi mediums. 100 students from 50 English medium schools and 44 students from 22 Marathi medium schools participated in elimination round. About 300 students and teachers attended the inaugural programme. Rtn. Paresh Shah, President, Rotary Club of Bombay Pier and Rtn. Shyam Makharia, President, Rotary Club of Bombay Queen City were present alongwith fellow rotarians on the occasion.
Avishkar - Inter-Collegiate Science Quiz
Elimination round of Avishkar – Inter-Collegiate Science Quiz was organized at the Centre on 24th November, 2017 in collaboration with the C H M College, Ulhasnagar, Thane District.
46 teams from 23 science colleges of Mumbai and around participated in the written elimination round. Students were asked to visit the exhibits of Science for Children, Sound & Hearing, Light & Sight and Hall of Aerospace galleries. Multiple choice questions based on these 4 gallery exhibits were asked in the written test. Top 4 teams were selected for the final verbal round. The quiz programme was witnessed by 150 students and teachers.
Zonal Level Science Drama Competition (West Zone)
Western Zonal Level Science Drama Competition was organized at the Centre on 28th November, 2017. 10 schools from 5 States i.e. Chhattisgarh, Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan participated in the drama competition and enacted their plays. The Science Drama Competition was inaugurated by Dr. Saryu Doshi, Padmashri and Former Honorary Director, NGMA, Mumbai, Renowned Industrialist and Art Historian. Out of the 10 teams, 3 teams namely Sau. Sulochanabai Patankar Kanya Shala, Patan, District Satara, Sir Padmpat Singhania School, Kota, Rajasthan and Childrens Academy, Malad were selected in the order of Merit by the panel of judges for the award of 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize respectively.
Inauguration of an Exhibition “Toilet Manifesto : Typological Investigations in Public Sanitation”
The Centre in association with MAD(E) IN MUMBAI and Observer Research Foundation, organized an Exhibition “Toilet Manifesto : Typological Investigations in Public Sanitation” as a part of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. Shri Ajoy Mehta, Municipal Commissioner, Municipal Corporation Greater Mumbai inaugurated the exhibition on 30th November, 2017. About 300 people participated in the inaugural programme. The exhibition aims to establish a holistic manifesto and framework for improving state of public toilets in our cities and villages. The exhibition will present 10 futuristic visions for public toilets, 10 building typology modes, 30 alternative sanitations technologies and 25 suggestions for improving state of public sanitation infrastructure in the country. The exhibition will be on display at Nehru Science Centre up to 8th December, 2017. The Centre will also be organising a panel discussion on the topic “Sanitation for All – Problems and Solutions under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan” on 1st December, 2017 at 6:00 PM. at the Centre.
Outreach programme at Sacred Heart School
On the occasion of 43rd Ward Level Science Exhibition on theme ‘Innovation for Sustainable Development’, NSCM actively participated in the outreach programme by conducting Science Demonstration Lecture on ‘Matter at Low Temperature’ at Sacred Heart School, Worli, Mumbai on 30th November, 2017. Around 825 students from 80 different schools of Mumbai and Suburbs actively took part in the programme.
Mobile Science Exhibition in Raigarh District
The Centre started the 2nd phase of Mobile Science Exhibition(MSE) in Raigad District from 23.11.2017 which will continue till 20.01.2017. During the period, MSE exhibition will be organised in 25 schools of Raigad district. In addition to the exhibition, science film shows and science shows will also be organised.
Outreach Programme at Vissanji Academy, Andheri - Expiscor 2017
The Centre in association with TIFR, Mumbai and Vissanji Academy, Andheri Mumbai
Organized a day long science project contest on 30th November in Vissanji Academy premises. It was for school students and 30 projects were selected by an expert committee for display. Winner will be suitably awarded in the evening after evaluation.
